With its red and white stripes and a single white star on a blue square, the Liberian flag is one of the most recognizable flags in Africa. Liberians call it the Lone Star, and every part of it carries meaning.
Africa’s oldest republic
Liberia declared its independence on July 26, 1847, making it Africa’s first and oldest modern republic. The flag was adopted the same year, and Liberians still celebrate Flag Day every August 24.
What the Liberian flag means
- The 11 stripes stand for the 11 men who signed Liberia’s Declaration of Independence.
- The blue square represents the African continent.
- The white star represents Liberia itself, a free and independent republic, shining as a light for Africa at a time when most of the continent was under colonial rule.
- Red and white stand for courage and purity.
The Lone Star today
For Liberians at home and across the diaspora, from Monrovia to Minnesota, the Lone Star is a symbol of identity and pride. You will see it at Independence Day celebrations, cookouts, graduations and, of course, on jewelry.
